City Council Approves Board Of Health

The city of Hastings, has passed a indoor mask policy, effectively immediately and lasting until February 23rd.

The Hastings City Council unanimously passed the mask policy at Monday’s Council meeting.

Kearney passed a mask policy last week and the Grand Island City Council will vote on a similar policy Tuesday night.

The Grand Island City Council met in special session last night with one item on the agenda to establish a board of health.

That Board was approved on a 8-1 vote and will meet at noon today to consider making a recommendation to the City Council concerning the indoor mask policy.

The board of Health consists of Mayor Roger Steele, Council President Mike Paulick, Police Chief Robert Faldorf, Director of the Central District Health Department Teresa Anderson and Dr. Rebecca Stenke.

A petition drive in Lincoln seeks to recall the mayor and most of the city council, an effort spurred by the city leaders’ actions during the coronavirus pandemic. Recall organizers on Monday took the petitions to the County-City Building as the council held a meeting. The recall effort accuses Mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird of seeking authoritarian control and attacking the liberty of Lincoln residents.

State data shows that 976 people were being treated for COVID-19 in the state’s hospitals, occupying 23% of the state’s hospital beds just below the threshold of 25% that will trigger more social distancing restrictions from the state.
